Mixed Martial Arts [MMA] is a full contact combat sport incorporating many fighting styles, including boxing, wrestling, kick boxing and jiu jitsu, to create an action packed mix of strength and skill.
At the turn of the century a comprehensive MMA rule set was implemented, primarily for athlete safety, but also to aid the mainstream acceptance of the sport.
Since the implementation of these rules the sport has grown rapidly, setting pay-per-view records in the USA and building a global fan base.
If you enjoy the intricate technique involved in other combat sports you will no doubt appreciate the adrenaline filled physical chess match of MMA.
There are, now, many promotional organizations hosting MMA events all around the world, from the local small hall shows to the national organisations, up to the globally recognised international brands.
At the top of this 'promotional pyramid' is the Ultimate Fighting Championship [UFC].
In 2007 the UFC purchased its nearest rival, Japans Pride FC, and has contracted most of the Pride athletes. The UFC also owns the WEC. So, at the moment, the UFC stands alone at the top.
The UFCs promotion and presentation, live or televised, is slick and professional, and not glitzy and tacky like some; utlimately the UFC is a 'must see'.
